How to Re-align Work & Life with Your Personal Values

August 1, 2026

If your calendar looks like a risk register and your evenings feel like never‑ending change control because your life’s a bit messy –  you’re not alone.  Many project managers and change contractors hit a point where the workload is relentless, the contract market feels uncertain, and the spark is gone. The most common root cause I see? Your career has drifted out of alignment with your personal core values.  Do you even know what they are?

This practical how-to guide shows you how to discover your core values, so you can make smarter career decisions, rebuild your emotional resilience (yes you’re stronger than you know), and feel fulfilled again—without blowing up your current commitments.

What Are Personal Core Values?

Personal core values are the handful of principles that matter most to you—your non‑negotiables. They act like a personal North Star.

  • Values vs. goals: Goals are outcomes you achieve; values are directions you live by.  What you will always naturally prioritise.

  • Values vs. preferences: Preferences change with convenience; values persist under pressure.  They last long term.

  • Examples (common for PM/change pros): Family, health, strong financial management, quilting, socialising, travelling etc. .

When you’re aligned with your values, work feels meaningful even when it’s hard. When you drift, or don’t link challenges to your personal values, you feel stuck, resentful, or exhausted—no matter the title or day rate.

Why They Matter So Much (Especially Now)

For project and change contractors, value alignment isn’t just “nice to have.” It directly affects performance, wellbeing, and career momentum.

  • Decision clarity under pressure: With clear values, trade‑offs become faster and cleaner. You stop overthinking and start prioritising with confidence.

  • Reduced burnout, stronger emotional resilience: Misalignment drains energy. Alignment replenishes it. You’ll recover faster from setbacks and stakeholder turbulence.

  • Boundary setting that sticks: Values give you language to push back on scope creep and unreasonable timelines without damaging relationships.

  • Authentic leadership: Teams trust leaders who are consistent. Acting from your values creates that consistency.

  • Career navigation in uncertain markets: When contracts wobble, values guide you toward roles, clients, and industries that actually fit, not just “what’s available.”

Quick self-check:

  • You’re working late most nights, but your core value is Family and you feel guilty for not spending more time with them.

  • You’re micromanaged, but your core value is Inventing new service offerings.

If this resonates with you, it’s time for a focused core values discovery.

How to Do Your Core Values Discovery (30 Minutes + a 7-Day Sprint)

Use this structured, time‑boxed exercise. You can complete the essentials in 30 minutes, then reinforce them over a week.

  1. 10‑Minute Energy Audit

  • List the last 10 work activities that gave you energy and the last 10 that drained you.

  • For each, jot the value it points to.

    • Energisers often signal values like Family, Wealth, Health, Social, or any other specific topic that keeps coming up for you.

    • Drainers reveal conflicts such as Misaligned priorities, Lack of recognition, Low trust.

  1. Story Mining (10 Minutes)

  • Note 3 proud moments in your career and 3 frustrating moments.

  • For each, ask: What value was honored? What value was violated?

  • Highlight repeating words or themes. Patterns are your clues.

  1. Value Clustering (5 Minutes)

  • From your notes, circle 8–10 value words that show up most.

  • Group similar ones (e.g., Growth/Learning/Mastery in your chosen field) and choose the label that resonates most.

  1. Forced‑Choice Ranking (5 Minutes)

  • Rank your top 6 values from most to least important.

  • Do 3 “tie‑breakers”: If you could only satisfy one value this quarter, which wins? Repeat until you have a confident top 5.

  1. Behaviour Signals and “Anti‑Signals”

  • For each of your top 5, write:

    • “I honor this value when I…” (specific behaviors)

    • “I violate this value when I…” (specific behaviors)

  • Example (Autonomy to innovate and create):

    • Honor: I negotiate deliverables, set review cadences, and protect focus blocks.

    • Violate: I accept last‑minute scope changes without renegotiating timelines.

  1. Create a One‑Line Decision Filter

  • Build a simple rule you can apply to requests, roles, and clients:

    • “If a request conflicts with [VALUE], I will [COUNTER‑ACTION] and propose [ALTERNATIVE].”

  • Example: “If a request conflicts with Family I will push back on timelines and propose a phased delivery so people are not working through Easter.”

  1. Boundary Script You Can Use Tomorrow

  • Draft a respectful, confident script to protect your top value.

  • Example: “To protect delivery quality and team wellbeing, we’ll keep the original scope for this sprint. I can propose a Phase 2 next week to cover the new items.”

  1. 7‑Day Micro‑Experiments (Reinforcement)

  • Choose one small action per day to honor a value:

    • Balance: Block 60 minutes of deep work and 30 minutes of real downtime.

    • Mastery: Enrol in a 1‑hour masterclass or tackle a thorny problem solo before meetings.

    • Impact: Ask, “What outcome does this task change?” Eliminate one low‑impact task.

    • Autonomy: Renegotiate one deadline or reporting format.

    • Connection: Schedule a genuine 15‑minute check‑in with a stakeholder.

  • Track energy before/after. Keep what works.

Mini case example

  • A senior project manager realised her top values were Family, Health and Learning on being a better project manager. She was stuck in heavy reporting which she did after hours. She renegotiated her status cadence, delegated low‑impact updates, and pitched a pilot to improve a broken handoff which was the cause of the reporting taking so long. Within two weeks, her energy rose, stakeholders noticed better outcomes, and she enjoyed her family time more and more.

Pro tip: Treat values as a living artifact—like a roadmap that updates with new information. Review monthly and after major milestones.
